Coercive Control in the Digital Age

December 3 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Cost: £50 per statutory sector delegate/£35 per voluntary sector delegate

This workshop will look at coercive control in the digital age, focusing on issues such as “sexploitation”, doxxing, so called “revenge porn” and tracking. In this session participants will have the opportunity to look at different tools that may be used by perpetrators, and reflect on community responses to tackling and preventing this form of abuse.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of tech abuse
  • Have increased knowledge of how digital technology can be used for good in preventing and tackling abuse
  • Have more confidence in developing responses to tech abuse

The facilitator: Ellie Hutchinson founded The Empower Project in 2017 in response to the need to have a specific feminist group looking at tech abuse and the impact of digital technology on sex and relationships. She was involved in changes to legislation around image abuse established Hollaback Edinburgh and co-founded Edinburgh Feminist Network. She is the author of the recently published work “Gender Based Violence in University Communities: A Practitioner Perspective” looking at the triumphs and challenges of embedding bystander approaches within higher education. She is passionate about participation, young people, feminism, revolutionary change and sequins. She is a mum of two absolute W I L D children and lives in Edinburgh.
