LGBT People’s Experiences of Domestic Abuse

Cost: £50 per statutory sector delegate/£35 per voluntary sector delegate
This half-day training will allow participants to better understand LGBT people’s experiences of domestic abuse and gender based violence, including how homophobia, biphobia and transphobia impacts on their experiences of abuse and of accessing services.
By the end of the session participants will:
- Understand appropriate use of inclusive language and terminology when working with LGBT people
- Explore the impact and dynamics of LGBT people’s experiences of domestic abuse and other forms of Gender Based Violence
- Reflect on the nature of homo/bi/transphobia and consider how this impacts on LGBT people’s experience of domestic abuse
- Consider the implications for effective risk assessment for LGBT survivors of domestic abuse
- Reflect on the nature of homo/bi/transphobia and heterosexism and consider how this impacts on LGBT people’s access to support service.
The facilitator: Janice Stevenson has 15 years’ experience in youth and community development work and graduated with first class BA(hons) Community Education from the University of Strathclyde in 2015 before joining the Programmes and Influencing Team at LGBT Youth Scotland as a Development Officer. She currently leads much of the organisation’s gender based violence work, including the Voices Unheard project and the Youth Commission on Housing and Homelessness. In addition, Janice also provides direct support to LGBT survivors of domestic abuse with Fearless, a domestic abuse support service for men and LGBT people which is operated by a partnership between Sacro, Men’s Advice Line, Shakti Women’s Aid and LGBT Youth Scotland.
We offer a wide range of training opportunities, drawing nearly 40 years’ experience of working with women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse. We offer specific training to our members, local women’s aid groups, as well as offering learning opportunities for practitioners and policy makers.
